The Only One He Loved
I remember his smile when you walked in the room
I remember the roses he gave you that bloomed
When you tickled my toes his eyes lit up
The love you had for us was enough
And when you left the light went out
His face was dispassionate and filled with doubt
How can he be a grandfather to all
Without a grandmother to pick him up if he falls
The shades stayed open through day and night
Even though he knew you had taken flight
He prayed every day that you would come back
It was like he thought you were simply knocked off the track
He told me one day that you would return
With presents in hand and remorse to burn
