Trees Keep Falling
The animals scream but their voices drown,
Parrots screech and jaguars howl day and dusk,
The choppers come closer, trees are cut down,
Night grows still, there rests a bulldozing truck.
Chop, cut, slash, tear, the workers are working,
Do you hear coins jingle in hands of greed?
On a throne the companies are laughing,
They are blind to the misery they bleed.
Indigenous people lose land and home,
‘Why should I care’ you ask, holding their chains.
We destroyed their culture, built their gravestone,
See their hope tearing, does your heart not pain?
Trees keep falling, we think we are cunning,
But soon it will be her turn for haunting

I wrote this piece for my Creative Writing class and it's a poem about deforestation. I thought it would be interesting to use poetry as a platform to raise awareness for global issues I'm passionate about. I hope you like it!
