I Can't Help But Notice
My friend I can’t help but notice
there’s a world out there
filled with couples linking arms
and holding hands
They walk through the
streets with smiles on their faces
and they kiss each other on the cheek
But my favorites are the ones in the cafes
with maybe lip rings and the long hair
the ones in the army jackets
with peace signs on their breasts
The ones that just link arms
instead of smogging in
the middle of Times Square
My friend I can’t help but notice
there’s a world outside my window
a world filled with starving people
morally and physically
I don’t know which one’s worse my friend
but it happens to us all
some have it less than others
while some have it far too much
of them all
My friend I can’t help but notice
there’s a world outside my window
filled with slaughterhouses
for animals and people alike
some for the meat that we eat
and the milk that we drink
Then there my friend,
are the factories
where everyone is starved
but the CEO
Then my friend, there are teachers
in the school houses
and they haven’t much say at all
But the administration
my friend,
gives the call
My friend I can’t help but notice
that there are people smooshed
against their window panes
People forced through the glasses
and thrown in the wild
Where there’s no one to call their name
Ah, my friend I can’t help but notice
that there are five wars going on right now
But we don’t know it at all
and of course there are
some we know too well
But my friend, I want to stop
them all
My friend I can’t help but notice
that I want to make them
lay down their arms
and link arms in a circle
Yes, every man and woman
and have one language that we speak
My friend, I can’t help but notice
that I want this more
than any tv screen
My friend I can’t help but notice
that I’m helpless like a worm
And I want to stop that now
I want to break my window
and then my friend I want to
scream and shout the words that
I’ve been taught and the words
that I’ve known
I want to join everyone together
the businessmen and the paupers
the queens and the cashiers
My friend I can’t help but notice
that there’s a world out there
callin’ my name
and the people all scream help
And yes my friend,
you’re outside my window
And you’re the first one I see
And you’re screaming help
the loudest of them all,
My friend
