You Said
You told me to dye my hair black
You said you liked girls like that
I went and did what you asked
Then you said you liked it blonde
I agreed and thought the black was wrong
You said you liked girls who cook
I took a cooking class for you
You said it wasn't good enough
I decided to try something new
You said you liked girls who have a nice tan
I immediately made it a part of my plan
I did what you asked in order to please you
I got a fake tan and became someone new
You decided you liked girls who were thin
I worked day and night to be skinny
Then you told me I still wasn't pretty
I tried my best to look good for you
I suffered through all the stuff you made me do
No matter what, I wasn't good enough
I did anything to gain your love
You strung me along as your puppet
My self esteem began to plummet
I'm now free from your hold
You're not here to judge me
I once was insecure but now I'm happy

I wrote this poem because I used to compare myself to other people and let them tell me how to live my life. Eventually I learned that I was the one in control of my life and I get to determine how I want to live it. You shouldn't let other people make your decisions for you, and I think often times people forget that.
