scavenged picture of
Buddha to remind
us all:
nothing lasts
forever

Five minute departures,
week long interruptions,
and then, unlike
animals, an insignificant
reunion takes place

In solitude, fingers
grasp a pen, then
run through shelves
of either knicknacks,
books, or cracker boxes

Temporary tear drops
might drum gently
on a lap desk,
yet soon wiped
off by a sympathetic
arm, blanketed
in a denim jacket

Flimsy shields
against dehumanization,
will still stand
tall, but in a bit
different comrades
will hold them up
for us.
