nicotine
there's a flicker of hope at the end
of a matchstick
that only i can understand
and only you
can taste
it
why do you light those cigarettes?
which burn your finger-
tips and
cloud your judgment
and the air,
both
but i never looked a blunt
in the face,
because it's not about
the nicotine
it's the glow of the butt
as it shimmers
out
that mesmerizes me long
enough to forget
i'm cold
and you consume the left-
over ashes that
fall
but i'm already blown away
