The Nocturnal
Shimmering stars
Wink upon my frame,
Wind whispering secrets
To the moon.
They grin in place of the sun
And know that tomorrow
They will return,
Cloaking the skies
With light
Upon an ebony canvas.
And the fields all dance
To the hymns of the owls,
Rustling
In midnight’s breeze.
They waltz
Because life is beautiful
Where they stand,
The moon illuminating
Swaying stems.
And the humans gaze
Upon the wonders of His world
Questioning the unanswerable
While smiling atop the mountains
As if they stood
Above Creation—
But we Nocturnals know better.
So spread your wings
And lurk in shadows
Before the sun
Reaches our wide eyes;
Here nightmares bloom,
Here we hunt without mercy,
Here the wolves howl
Probing for their prey.
The moon praises night’s achievements
Nodding slowly
Behind the peak of the mountains
As the sun soars in the East
And the Earth begins a new day;
Our activities
Fade
Within darkness.
