Ode to Grandpa
He fought in the war,
But now he will fight no more,
His light burned bright for all to see,
Yet now his light is out of sight.
He has gone above,
To a land of light and love,
Where his light now does shine,
Bright as any in a world of many.
He may not be here with us today,
But his spirit hears us pray.
We laid him to rest for his light had gone,
Yet now a new star in the sky shines on.
He has left this earth,
And gone on to another place of equal worth,
But his spirit will never truly be gone from here,
As it lives on in those he held close and dear.
When you look up at the night sky from here,
A new star shines bright and near,
A reminder of fun times gone and past,
His spirit watching us all as time moves fast.

My grandpa died about a week ago, and I wrote this poem for his memorial and also read it at the memorial service. MY grandpa served in Vietnam, and the chemicals he was exposed to there eventually led to him contracting fatal cancers.
