                                  Soil Dark

My skin

         Ebony

Like the rich soil beneath our feet

The soil that gives nutrients to the world around it

Fostering the growth of cocoa trees and mango saplings

Its sacrifice ignored as people step on it disregarding its simple beauty

A beauty that transcends the ground at our feet

That can be found in/on my skin

Ebony

And dark like the soil.

Much like the people in

Our towns

Cities

And media

Dark shades of skin are overlooked

     disregarded

Much like the soil beneath our feet

        The soil that grounds us

                      And trees

                         Mango Sweet

                 Mangos pure and sweet

The juices glisten on my skin as I take a bite

The sweet sweet smells fill the air

Koyals surround me the royals of all birds

                      Dark and beautiful

                       Dark and present

                                Dark

                                And

                               Sweet

all grounded by the soil beneath our feet

I am Soil Dark and Mango Sweet

The author's comments:

In the realm of words, inspiration took its flight,

From "Koyal Dark Mango Sweet," a book of might.

Jeta, a young girl, her battles fought and won,

Caught between what her family has set for her and what she has set forth herself

With a tongue that slices, she voiced beliefs anew,

Her mother's comments, a judgment she'd eschew.

Her darkness, seen as harsh, undesirable, unkind,

A misguided link between shade and a masculine mind.

Society's assumptions cast a shadow on her soul,

Labeled as aggressive, unwanted, and untold.

But within the pages, I found solace and affinity,

For Jeta's journey mirrored my own identity.

A world quick to judge, to shape my narrative,

Painted me dark, masculine, and undesirably imperative.

Yet through this poem, I'll challenge that decree,

To show that darkness and sweetness can intertwine seamlessly.

For in truth, depth resides in shades that gleam,

A spectrum of beauty, far beyond the mainstream.

Let us rise above the confines of others' perception,

Embrace our true essence, defy societal deception.

So, I'll ink these verses, reclaiming my voice,

To shatter the myths, to make my own choice.

In the tapestry of existence, my truth shall beat,

Dark and sweet, a testament to my complete.
