Squeaky Trees
It almost sounds like the name
Of a Beatle’s song
When the drug went to their heads
Like a humorous ballad
A push of breath between the lips
Of the stoic giants of the forest
Perhaps the whine and whimper
Of a gentle beast
On a crisp rainy night
I know they can’t utter a word
Or express a thought
But a whispering of the leaves
I know it’s the wail and hiss
Of a man’s tennis shoes
As he treads down a slick street
Yet I can’t help the smile
The twitch of lips
At the thought
Of Squeaky Trees

This was inspired by a walk with my dad and dog on a rainy night in Big Bear, California.
