As I sit translating
latin so foreign in tongue to me
but so close in soul to me

the epics of heroes, order, and reason
sing to me their stories
planting scenes of courageous deeds
straightforward evils
and triumphant good, always

as I sit translating
overhearing a conversation
so close in tongue to me
but so alien in soul to me
I fail to notice any reason
any rationality, sense
the queer actions
of my contemporaries
force me to question
how tangible is my sanity
perhaps I belong in another age
an epoch that understands me?

Apologies for the formatting, it should be two stanzas with the split occurring just prior to the second "As I sit translating" no bizarre line spacing was intended.
