gnarled knuckles
clutch splintering oars,
and glass water
yields beneath
most tender ripples.
fresh wakes
crawl up the oar
and vibrate
through robust arms
in each artery and vein
until it echoes
through the vessel
of his being.
bowed sheets
of teak which
enclose him
are knotted
like exhausted
muscles and
bowlines.
taste of salt
on his desiccated lips,
he is weather-beaten
like the rope that moors his
boat with
the double half hitch.
simple and secure.
