The potential of a community garden was noticed in a neglected lot in my neighborhood. The initiative was decided upon, in spite of it feeling daunting. Neighbors were reached out to, permission was secured from local authorities and fundraisers were organized to buy soil, seeds, and tools. Donations of supplies were given by local businesses which provided the necessary encouragement to begin.

Something amazing was witnessed as the planting was commenced by volunteers. By people of all ages, teamwork was embraced—a lesson in vegetable cultivation was discovered by children, gardening tips were exchanged by families and joy in teaching others was found by elderly neighbors. The garden's life-improving connection was shared by one elderly woman as a reason to go outside daily.

Observed was an incredible transformation. An energetic space, filled with flowers, herbs, and vegetables, was created from the once-abandoned lot. The community was strengthened by the garden's most meaningful change. Names were exchanged help was offered, and friendships were built by people who had never spoken before.

The project imparted to me the understanding that meaningful change can be led by small actions, like planting a seed. It was reminded to me that people can be united, and lasting connections can be encouraged, by a simple idea. Pride is taken in helping to create something helpful for my community.
