Law, Stereotypes, and Our Futures
First off, if you have the aspiration to pursue a career in law, you have come to the right place. I know exactly what it feels like to be asked the same question "What do you want to be?" As soon as I respond, everyone is quick to assume that being a lawyer means arguing. In reality, there are many options such as corporate, patent, real estate, or employment law.
You may instantly become confused why most have this assumption, and it is because that may be the only exposure that people have gotten. When it comes to arguing with the other party, it is most likely a career in litigation. That is why it is essential to take advantage of any research or exposure to law that we can get.
Before we can decide on a career, we have to dip our feet into the water. For instance, get involved in any law-affiliated club or even start one. It may come as a surprise, but any business, debate, or government club is associated with law. Knowing the ins and outs of the corporate world can assist you with diplomacy and how to communicate with the other party.
Doing volunteer work for a local non-profit can also be related to pro bono work. A pro bono lawyer focuses on assisting others, especially those that do not have the financial means to afford a lawyer. It is time to stop focusing on stereotypes. Just because others may see you as an introvert, that should never stop you from pursuing something that may turn into your passion. Whatever your personal interest and activities may be, you can always connect it back to law!
