“I Live In A Doorway”

The poem “I Live In A Doorway” by Rachel Yang is about the struggle of a girl trapped between two cultures. Yang describes being stuck between her Chinese heritage and her American upbringing. The piece is eloquently written and relatable to multicultural teens all over the world.

I can relate to Yang’s poem because I am also an ABC (American Born Chinese). Yang accurately depicts Chinese culture, writing about how relatives that she doesn’t know pinch her cheek and how she is “called American a million times.” I am often looked down upon by my strict Chinese family because I am “whitewashed and American.” Yang’s poem ultimately sheds light on the problems that multicultural teens have to face.
