My gun is rigid at my side-loaded and ready to shoot. But I know that I do not need it anymore. The smooth black metal has become surprisingly comforting in the last few months. It is what protects me from the flame covered world.

You would think that a murder machine might inspire fear into a person like me-a person who is small, young and naïve. But when I hold the large black repeating rifle in my hands, when I smooth my thin callused fingers over the fine brown trigger-I feel completely and absolutely safe.

There is no sound. The jungle is completely and utterly silent. Being unused to such quiet, I shift nervously as my ears ring. The wind whips silently through the bright green trees and my shadow dances behind me as I wait. For what I am waiting for, I am not entirely sure. Do I want a white flag waved at me? Do I want the enemy to come running back in on bare feet, prepared to fight to the death? I don’t know.

The bright African sun is rising slowly, tinting the sky a dull, murderous red. It’s as if the sky is a mirror, reflecting the color of the forest floor back into the Heavens. The cloudless canvas immortalizes the blood that stains the fertile earth around me. The blood that stains the faces of my brothers, the faces of my enemies…Red on black. Red on black.

I slowly stagger around the small open field-the only break in the endless forest of trees for two miles. As I stumble, my breath escapes my lips much too fast and my heart is beating louder than a drum. All the flowing calm of night is gone-replaced with a cold, biting atmosphere of fear. It must be over a hundred degrees, and yet I am shivering.

I realize what it is that I am afraid of: Being the last alive. Death is the only one I can truly depend on in this world (next to my rifle), for he is always with me.

In death everyone looks the same. They lie everywhere-my friends, my enemies, my brothers, my family…They meet the exact definition of war-torn: They are destroyed, broken, wrecked. Whoever said the dead look peaceful was dead wrong. They are not as peaceful as they are eerie and blank. Where there was once color and vivacious life, there is now emptiness and neutral shades of grey.

Hot tears streak down my cheeks, aggravating my wounds as I try to rouse my fellow soldiers. And one after another, they do not get up.

Friends and enemies. Friends and enemies. It does not matter what side they were on now, for they have all gone to the same place.

Shaking, wiping the hot salt tears with my soft palm, I heft my gun up onto my right shoulder. I feel a bit safer. But I turn away, forcing myself not to waste anymore time staring at the dozen small, mutilated bodies that held life no more than a day ago.

As I turn, I come face to face with a terrible sight-a shining young man with dark black eyes. His scarred face burning, tear-streaked and ugly. He looks demonic and evil. Childish and somber.
He holds a gun just like mine. He wears a shirt just like mine. His eyes shine just as mine do. His hair is cut just as mine is.

And then I realize-this demon is me. I am looking at my own reflection on a bullet-riddled, half-turned over car.

This is what the world has made me. It has taken me from childhood and pushed me roughly into adulthood. I am nothing but a soldier now, nothing but a statistic. I have no personality, no meaning, and no free-will. My only purpose is to follow the commands of the person who has given me a shiny gun. I am still just a naïve child, yet I am now something more. I am a child soldier.

So...yeah. This is sooo much darker than my usual drabbles and fictions... I wrote it after seeing the Hunger Games and KONY 2012...Don't be afraid...

When I wrote this though, it just kind of flowed from my fingertips...and I was proud of it. So I HAD to post it. (I'm afraid to hand this in in Creative Writing Class-I scared my peer-editor oopps!) well...tell me what you lovely Teeninkers think! :)
